The Lord, Our Righteousness

Philippians 4:7 – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Some experiences of peace in life are in the domain of human understanding and within the purview of human explanations. The nations of the earth formalize peaceful resolutions from time to time and peacekeeping systems across regions of continents. Yet the world cannot be said to have peace. This is a confirmation that the peace that comes from God is the only true and lasting peace. In Philippians 4:7, the Apostle Paul writes, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This verse offers profound comfort, pointing to a divine peace that transcends human reasoning and circumstances.

Unlike worldly peace, which often depends on the absence of conflict or the presence of favourable conditions, the peace of God is independent of external situations. It is not merely a feeling of calm, but a deep, abiding sense of security and well-being rooted in God’s presence and promises. This peace can exist even in the midst of trials, grief, or uncertainty, defying logic and human expectations.

Paul’s words come in the context of encouragement to the Philippians to rejoice, pray, and present their requests to God with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:4-6). The pathway to this supernatural peace involves a heart surrendered to God, consistent prayer, and a spirit of gratitude. When believers shift their focus from anxiety to trust in God, His peace acts as a guard, protecting their hearts and minds from fear and despair.

Ultimately, this peace is a reflection of our relationship with Christ. It’s not something we achieve through effort but something we receive as a gift from the One who has overcome the world (John 16:33). In Christ, we find a peace that the world cannot give—and cannot take away.
